Theme- Tune up and Transform

This year on April 6, 2018 the Teaching & Learning Conference was held in conjunction with the 2nd Regional Symposium for Innovation, Creativity, and Research. The theme, Tune Up and Transform showed support not only to faculty but to students who were attending the Regional Symposium for Innovation, Creativity, and Research sessions. The Teaching & Learning Conference provided an opportunity for UT faculty and staff to share and learn new teaching/learning best practices, innovations, and lessons learned related to effective active learning and to promote the scholarship of teaching/learning on campus. The conference also provided an avenue for faculty and staff to share work and insights related to teaching and learning from professional conferences. There were great presenters, which included keynote speakers Paul Anderson, Angela Child and Macy Urrutia.

Faculty Speaker:

Angie Child is an experienced educator across the K-20 spectrum. She has taught in both public elementary and college level classrooms, and worked as an instructional coach in K-5 classrooms to support in-service teachers in strengthening their reading and writing instruction.

Her practitioner-oriented research has included; text structures in elementary text, explicit instruction in literacy lessons, discussion in comprehension, and how Core Reading Programs support the work of in-service teachers.

She currently works with a cadre of local in-service teachers in a professional development/coaching model, providing them with research-based strategies for promoting reading and writing within their respective classrooms.  Angie has been with Utah Tech since 2011.

Student Speaker:

Macy Urrutia is a Senior Exercise Science Major from Twin Falls, Idaho. She has a passion for health and human performance, which inspired her engagement in undergraduate research, as part of the UT Biomechanics and Sports Science Lab. This August, she will be starting her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Northern Arizona University- Phoenix Biomedical Campus.
